In June 2003, at the conference "Dialogue of Civilizations: Caucasus", organized
by the Department of UNESCO for Cultural Policy and Intercultural Dialogue in Vilnius,
creation of the Chair in Intercultural Dialogue at Tbilisi was decided. After 3
years of preparation activities, in March 2006, an agreement about the establishment
of the UNESCO Chair in Intercultural Dialogue was signed by the Secretary-General
of UNESCO and the Rector of Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. On March
31 - April 1, 2006 the meeting of the representatives of the UNESCO Chairs was held
in Paris. A seminar discussing "The Role of Higher Education in Promoting the Intercultural
and Interreligious Dialogue" was arranged where Tbilisi State University was presented
by professor Nino Chikovani. TSU Chair in Intercultural Dialogue was accepted as
UNESCO/UNITWIN network member.
The Chair hosts 1 full, 1 associate and 4 assistant professors. The new mandatory
as well as elective courses were prepared for the BA and MA programs.
